Industrial Wastewater TSS Treatment

Total Suspended Solids (TSS) Removal from Industrial Wastewater

RNR Environmental develops customized treatment programs to remove or substantially reduce total suspended solids (TSS) from industrial wastewater. Suspended solids may include clay, silt, paint pigments, metal particles, organic material and other fine contaminants that create turbidity, clog filters, increase sludge volume or interfere with wastewater reuse and discharge.

Instead of recommending a generic chemical program, RNR evaluates the customer’s actual wastewater. Representative sample testing identifies the appropriate treatment chemistry, dosage, mixing requirements and method for separating the resulting solids. Treatment may combine coagulation, contaminant binding and flocculation to transfer fine suspended material into larger, separable solids that can settle or be removed through filtration or dewatering.

Laboratory testing has produced substantial TSS reductions in specific submitted samples. Truck-wash wastewater decreased from 5,760 mg/L to less than 1 mg/L, petroleum-facility wastewater decreased from 2,850 mg/L to less than 1 mg/L, and latex paint-wash wastewater decreased from 635 mg/L to less than 1 mg/L. These results demonstrate treatment potential but are not guarantees; actual performance depends on the chemistry and characteristics of each waste stream.

Applications may include equipment-wash water, paint and coating wastewater, metal-finishing wastewater, petroleum wastewater, ink and dye water, manufacturing process water, mining and remediation water, vacuum-truck waste and other high-solids industrial streams. Treated water can be evaluated for reuse, sewer discharge or permitted discharge. Final compliance should always be confirmed through an appropriate independent analytical laboratory.

RNR offers no-cost treatability testing on representative wastewater samples. Call 818-606-1673 or email rob@rnr-enviro.com to discuss your wastewater, current TSS concentration and treatment requirements.

Total Suspended Solids Treatment

Suspended Solids We Evaluate

RNR evaluates industrial wastewater containing clay, silt, soil, paint pigments, metal fines, organic matter, process residue and other suspended particles. Wastewater may also contain emulsified oils and grease, color, metals and dissolved contaminants that affect treatment. Because particle size, concentration, pH and wastewater chemistry vary considerably, representative testing is used to determine which solids can be separated and the treatment dosage required.

How the TSS Treatment Process Works

The customized treatment is mixed into the wastewater to promote coagulation, contaminant binding and flocculation. Fine suspended particles combine into larger, separable solids that can settle or be removed through filtration or dewatering. This process can substantially improve water clarity and reduce the solids loading placed on downstream filters, clarifiers and wastewater systems. The separated solids must be properly characterized, handled and disposed of according to applicable requirements.

Representative Sample Testing

Send RNR a representative wastewater sample together with any available laboratory results, current TSS concentration, target discharge limits and information about the generating process. Testing can compare treatment blends and dosages, evaluate settling or filtration, and estimate material cost per treated gallon. RNR provides treatability testing at no charge; the customer is responsible for shipping the sample. Final discharge compliance should be verified by an appropriate independent analytical laboratory. Call 818-606-1673 or email rob@rnr-enviro.com to discuss sample requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

TSS treatment depends on the actual wastewater chemistry and suspended material. Contact RNR at 818-606-1673 or rob@rnr-enviro.com for a representative sample evaluation.

Total suspended solids are particles retained in the water, including clay, silt, soil, paint pigments, metal fines, organic matter and process residue. TSS can increase turbidity, clog filters, create sludge and interfere with wastewater reuse or discharge. TSS is different from total dissolved solids (TDS), which consists of dissolved salts, minerals and other constituents that pass through a standard filter.

Treatment can use coagulation, contaminant binding and flocculation to combine fine suspended particles into larger, separable solids. These solids can then settle or be removed through filtration or dewatering. The appropriate chemistry, dosage, mixing and separation method must be determined by testing a representative wastewater sample.

Results depend on the specific wastewater. In laboratory testing of individual submitted samples, TSS was reduced from 5,760 mg/L to less than 1 mg/L in truck-wash wastewater, from 2,850 mg/L to less than 1 mg/L in petroleum-facility wastewater, and from 635 mg/L to less than 1 mg/L in latex paint-wash wastewater. These examples demonstrate treatment potential but do not guarantee identical results. Representative testing is required, and final compliance should be verified by an appropriate independent analytical laboratory.
