Industrial Wastewater Treatment + Integrated Odor Control

RNR Environmental provides customized dry-blend, clay-based treatment for difficult industrial wastewater. Our treatment can coagulate and flocculate suspended solids, emulsified oils, certain metals and other contaminants while also mitigating objectionable odors in the treated water and separated solids.

Instead of using one chemical program to treat the wastewater and another product to address odor, suitable facilities can accomplish both within one treatment process.

Each wastewater stream is individually tested to determine treatment chemistry, dosage, contaminant reduction, separation characteristics, odor-control performance and projected treatment cost before full-scale implementation. Treated water may be evaluated for reuse, sewer discharge or applicable NPDES permit requirements.

Heavy Metal Removal

Heavy-metal removal is one of RNR's primary industrial wastewater treatment applications. Depending on wastewater chemistry, RNR treatment can substantially reduce chromium, copper, lead, nickel, zinc, aluminum, iron, barium, cadmium and other metals. In the laboratory example shown, chromium was reduced from 12.35 mg/L to 0.015 mg/L, copper from 18.63 mg/L to 0.025 mg/L, lead from 5.68 mg/L to <0.01 mg/L and zinc from 128.8 mg/L to 0.016 mg/L.

Total Suspended Solids (TSS)

RNR treatment coagulates and flocculates suspended material so it can be rapidly separated from the treated water. In the laboratory example shown, Total Suspended Solids (TSS) were reduced from 72,500 mg/L to <1 mg/L.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

RNR also treats industrial wastewater where Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and dissolved contaminants are treatment concerns. Performance depends heavily on the specific dissolved constituents and wastewater chemistry, which is why RNR evaluates the customer's actual wastewater before recommending treatment.

Oil & Grease Removal

RNR treatment can address suitable industrial wastewater containing oil, grease and emulsified contaminants. In the laboratory example shown, total oil and grease were reduced from 1,060 mg/L to as low as 3 mg/L.

Additional Contaminant Reduction

The same laboratory evaluation demonstrated substantial reductions across numerous other wastewater parameters. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) was reduced from >17,000 mg/L to <10 mg/L, while total solids were reduced from 77,200 mg/L to as low as 1,510 mg/L.

Why RNR Clay-Based Treatment Is Different

RNR treatment is designed around more than simply forming floc. What happens to that floc afterward—including pumping, separation, filtration, pressing and dewatering—can be just as important. RNR develops dry, clay-based treatment chemistry around the customer's wastewater, existing equipment and treatment objectives.

Strong, Filterable Floc

RNR's dry clay-based chemistry can produce a strong, cohesive floc designed to withstand handling and agitation without shredding as readily as the soft, sticky floc associated with some liquid-polymer treatment programs. The resulting solids can release water readily during filtration and mechanical dewatering, producing compactable solids in suitable applications.

Reduced Filter Blinding

Sticky polymer-treated solids can coat or blind filter media, filter bags and filter presses, reducing filtration efficiency and increasing maintenance. RNR's clay-based treatment can be substantially less prone to this type of filter blinding in suitable applications, potentially simplifying filtration, reducing consumables and improving dewatering.

Float It or Settle It

Different wastewater systems are designed to separate solids differently. RNR can develop treatment chemistry and operating conditions for applications where the treated floc needs to float or where it needs to settle, allowing the chemistry to work with many existing treatment and dewatering systems.

Use Your Existing Equipment

RNR treatment can be integrated into a wide range of existing wastewater systems and separation equipment, including settling tanks, flotation systems, filter presses, filter bags, centrifuges, dewatering boxes, batch tanks and continuous-flow systems. Treatment can range from simple filtration methods to high-volume industrial installations processing hundreds of gallons per minute.

One Treatment Chemistry for Multiple Waste Streams

Where sample testing confirms compatibility, RNR can often develop one dry-blend treatment chemistry capable of treating multiple wastewater streams. This may allow compatible waste streams to be combined before treatment, simplifying chemical management and making better use of existing wastewater storage capacity.

From Simple Batch Treatment to High-Volume Systems

Effective industrial wastewater treatment does not automatically require expensive new equipment. RNR's treatment approach can be used in simple batch applications or incorporated into larger automated and continuous-flow systems. The objective is to determine the chemistry first, then use the simplest practical treatment and separation process appropriate for the customer's wastewater, volume and existing infrastructure.

Treat the Water. Manage the Solids.

RNR can help customers determine whether it makes more economic sense to solidify an entire liquid waste stream or first treat the wastewater, separate recoverable water and concentrate the remaining solids. The separated solids can then be filtered, pressed, dewatered, solidified or otherwise managed. This can substantially change hauling and disposal economics when a facility is otherwise paying to transport large quantities of water.

INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER ODOR CONTROL

Wastewater Treatment + Odor Control in One Process

RNR wastewater treatment can do more than separate contaminants and suspended solids. In suitable wastewater streams, the treatment process can also deodorize the treated water and separated solids while leaving a clean fragrance.


This can allow customers to address wastewater treatment and odor-control concerns within the same treatment process rather than relying on a completely separate wastewater deodorization step.


For facilities dealing with odorous industrial wastewater, sludge, process water, wash water or other difficult waste streams, RNR can evaluate contaminant reduction, solids separation and odor-control performance during sample testing.
